About

After stints in construction, restaurants, and other fields, I started writing and editing professionally in the late 1990s.

I wrote freelance reviews and features for a number of Bay Area publications;
was Managing Editor for the pioneering webzine, Feedmag, and for the Web's first daily political news site, Netizen
; worked at TIME.com for a number of years and at Condé Nast for a minute; and helped launch the award-winning photography, history, and culture site, LIFE.com.

Along the way I worked with and learned from some of the best in the business.

Also:

— Contributor: New York Times, Washington Post, Salon, Boston Globe, Smithsonian, Daily Beast, Los Angeles Review of Books, Red Canary magazine, Columbia Journalism Review, CNN.com, others.

— Wrote the Foreword to photographer Joseph Szabo's book, Hometown (2020); told the life story of a businessman, inventor, and problem-solver named Jim Miller in Nothing Bad Ever Happens (2017); and edited an anthology of baseball writing, Covering the Bases, and Gluttony, both from Chronicle Books.

— These days I'm a librarian at the Yonkers Public Library, within sight of the Hudson River and the Palisades.
 I live with my family in New York City, and still occasionally take on freelance work.
